A fifth UK case of a strain of mpox
considered more transmissible than
previous strains has been detected.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA)
confirmed on November 29 that the new
case was identified in Leeds, with the
patient now receiving specialist care at
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS
Foundation Trust.
The individual had recently returned from
Uganda, one of several African countries
experiencing community transmission of
clade Ib mpox.
The UKHSA clarified that this latest case is
unrelated to the four previous cases in the
UK, which were linked to the same
household.
Professor Susan Hopkins, the agency's chief
medical adviser, said, "The risk to the UK
population remains low following this fifth
case, and we are working rapidly to trace
close contacts and reduce the risk of any
potential spread."
