METHODS 1

WEEK 1

Everybody does daily ‘research’.
A research is systematic and objective.Asking questions to yourself or others. Good
research is asking the right questions.

Professional research is:
- Verifiable
- Objective
- Logical
- Methodological
- Technical

3 characteristics of a researcher are:
- Attitude: independent and open
- Knowledge: of the methods and the topics
- Skills: by doing it and learning tricks

Research can be approached in 2 ways:

Fundamental = theoretical problem, focus on knowledge problems, generating
general knowledge developing a scientific theory.

E.g. In what way does participation influence labour motivation?

Applied = practical problem, solving problems in practical situations, research in
specific context, the social relevance is higher.

E.g. How can staff turnover at company X be reduced?

Quantitative research = numerical information, measurement characteristics of a
group.

E.g. How many people have left the company in the past year?

Qualitative research = the meaning, underlying reasons, unique information.

, E.g. Why are the workers dissatisfied?

Triangulation = this is a combination of different types of research.
- Qualitative and quantitative
- Different quantitative methods
- Different qualitative methods

The purpose of triangulation is to:
- Confirm responses from multiple answers
- Increase the validity

Deductive research
- Theory testing
- A theory or model is the starting point of the research

E.g. How can company X best motivate its employees with small awards, as
mentioned in Gaures theory, to work faster and better?

Inductive research
- Theory not known
- Theory forming

E.g. W
hich app is the most suitable for company X to monitor labour satisfaction?

Quality criteria for good research:
1. Independence
- Opinions, interests and preferences do not play a role
- Objectivity, distance to subject and people
- intersubjective , peer feedback

2. Falsifiability of statements
- Conclusions can be confirmed and refuted
- Transparency

3. Reliability
- Repeatable
- Free from accidental errors
