NR 512 Week 8 Discussion, Reflection, 2nd Life Experiences, Nursing Informatics Skills (Two Versions) Discuss how Course Outcomes were supported and met by the activities you have completed in this course. Hello Dr. Bev and Colleagues, This week we are asked to look at the course outcomes and how they were supported by the activities we completed in this course. The course outcomes are as follows: “1. Define key terms in informatics, healthcare informatics, and nursing informatics; 2. Demonstrate synthesis of nursing and non-nursing science with information and computer technologies; 3. Examine the ethical/legal issues arising in NI practice while using, designing, managing, upgrading, and building information systems; 4. Exemplify professional values and scholarship to support professional and personal development; 5. Explore the roles, competencies and skills associated with nursing informatics while collaborating as part of the healthcare team; 6. Describe the information and knowledge needs of nurses in all practice domains and settings, electronic health records (EHRs), and patient-care information technology (IT); 7. Explore trends and issues in NI and their impact on nursing practice in all domains; and 8. Discuss the value of using standardized terminology while supporting the nursing profession in all of its practice settings” (Meadows, 2016). Throughout this course we utilized various techniques to meet these course outcomes such as the use of a virtual reality program, Second Life, and through the use of different computer programs and applications, for instance Microsoft Word and PowerPoint programs for the completion of assignments. In addition, we explored current trends via reputable sources examining up-to-date concerns and hot topics as applied to nursing informatics. Through the weekly discussions we discussed and collaborated ideas on the information and knowledge needs of nurses in various practice settings, and as we will apply to our future roles as advance practice nurses. After the completion of this course we have a better understanding of how computer science, information science, and nursing science work together with the aid of technology to provide safe, effective, and efficient patient-centered care. Overall, throughout this course we were able to explore various aspects of nursing informatics, ethical computing, protection of patient information, and future application of these skills to our chosen profession. Warmly, Jaime Reference Meadows, B. (Presenter). (2016, July). NR512 fundamentals of nursing informatics syllabus. Reading presented at Chamberlain College of Nursing, Downers Grove, IL/USA.
