NR447 Week 4 Discussion Question, Transformational Nursing Leaders (Two Responses)
Week 4: Transformational Nursing Leaders This week's graded discussion topic relates to the following Course Outcome (CO). • CO7 Apply leadership concepts in the development and initiation of effective plans for the microsystems and system-wide practice improvements that will improve the quality of healthcare delivery. (POs 2 and 3) Review Appendix A, Sections I–V in Finkelman (2016). 1. Select one of the sections and share how your chief nurse executive demonstrates expertise in these competencies. Your comments should be about the “highest nursing leader” in your organization. Typically, this is the leader who represents nurses and nursing to the governing board. 2. In your own words, explain the differences between a transactional nursing leader and a transformational nursing leader. What one is more like your Nurse Executive? 3. Describe how the Nurse Executive “leads the charge” for transformational leadership in an organization where you work or have done prelicensure clinical experiences. The nurse executive competency CNO Kerry at my facility exhibits is listed in Appendix A: I – Communication and Relationship-Building. Communication and Relationship-building is based on effective communication, shared decision-making, relationship management, community involvement and medical staff relationships and academic relationships (Finkelman, 2016). She is very much involved in our unit, she makes the time to talk to the nurses and listen to their concern or suggestions. The unit I work opened two months ago, she already made a lot of changes one of the concerns we had was getting too many admissions at once from the emergency room department, it was unsafe for a new admission to wait for more than thirty minutes without the admitted nurse assessment. She was able to set up a meeting with both department supervisors in order to find a way to solve the issues. Some other changes she also made include morning and night shift huddles so that we always know what is going on in the unit, nurses do not need to be employ for at least a year for tuition reimbursement, multiple educational opportunity for nurses and more staff involvement in the organization. Leadership is the ability to influence and pursue the follower by guiding, motivating and directing to achieve organizational effectiveness (Mohammad 2011) Transformational leadership to me involve leading by example, it’s the type of leadership that inspires employees to do better, advising everyone to work as a team in order to provide the best quality of care. Whereas, transactional leadership clarifies the precise goal that needs to be attained, if employees comply it will result in a reward but if there is no compliance the result will be punishment. Mrs. Kerry displays a transformational leadership style. She makes sure the employees work as a team and collaborate in tasks that needs to complete, She motivates her staffs, respect everyone, and leads by example. Finkelman, A. (2016).
