the competencies you have learnt from Assessments 2 and 3.
(15 marks)
Introduction
The transition from academic study to the workplace requires a combination of technical
knowledge, interpersonal competence, ethical conduct, and professional awareness.
Through Assessments 2 and 3 of the LRM3701 module, I have developed a range of
competencies that demonstrate my readiness to function effectively in a labour relations
environment.
1. Professional and Ethical Competence
One of the main competencies gained is the ability to apply ethical principles within
organisational contexts. Assessment 2 emphasised professional ethics in labour
relations, including confidentiality, fairness, and compliance with the Labour Relations
Act 66 of 1995. I have learnt to make ethical decisions that balance organisational
interests with employee rights, ensuring procedural and substantive fairness in all HR
and IR actions.
Example: In disciplinary matters, I can now differentiate between fair and unfair labour
practices, ensuring consistency and respect for due process.
2. Communication and Negotiation Skills
Assessment 3 developed my interpersonal communication and collective
bargaining skills. Effective labour relations depend on clear, respectful, and assertive
communication. I learnt how to prepare for and participate in collective bargaining
sessions, using negotiation techniques such as mutual gains bargaining to achieve win-
win outcomes.
