Introduction

With the recent developments and advancements in the world today, most organizations

are putting extra effort and care into their employees. Therefore, employees are considered to be

one of the major assets that a business can have. In addition to ensuring that an organization hires

employees with the required skills and knowledge in handling the day to day activities, they

ensure that they provide the best environment for the employees so that they can be productive.

One of the most recent techniques in ensuring that employees perform in the best environment is

availing them with flexible working hours. This is a technique that most human resource

managers employ today to ensure that employees work when most productive. This study aims

to look at the scope of flexible working and how organizations today have implemented this

technique.

Flexible working

In the previous years, most organizations had a traditional sense of working whereby

employees had a schedule in which they followed to work. It was often based on the idea that

working hours were from nine to five. However, as time progressed the human resource

managers realized that the ideality of working only specific hours may bring boredom to the

employees and reduce their productivity (Andresen and Nowak, 2014). Additionally, it is a

method that did not take into account the personal needs of an individual nor the time that they

are best productive. Therefore, most organizations have begun to abolish this traditional sense of

working hours by introducing flexible working schedules for the employees. Additionally, the

need by employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance has also largely contributed to the

adoption of flexible working.
