,INTRODUCTION

EOR also known as Enhanced Oil Recovery is a set of methods designed to optimize the
production of a producing well. In other words EOR is used to extract hydrocarbons a reservoir
which is nearly impossible to extract. There are three types of recovery namely:

• Primary recovery
• Secondary recovery
• Tertiary recovery

An oil well goes through three phases of
recovery during its lifespan.
Primary recovery naturally occurs due the
pressure difference of the reservoir and the
surface where the reservoir pressure is strong
enough to force the oil to the surface. The
recovery factor of the first stage of recovery
i.e. primary recovery is 5% - 15%. After a
while the reservoir pressure reduces as time
goes
and when it is observed that the reservoir has Figure 1 3 stages of recovery more potential

for production, then secondary production is brought into play.

Secondary recovery completely relies on injecting external fluids into the reservoir to displace
the leftover hydrocarbons to the production well. The materials used for injecting are usually
water and gas. The gas which is injected are CO2 or other inert gases. These gases enter the
reservoir and expands to push the oil to the surface or it reduces the viscosity of the oil to
mobilize the oil. The average recovery factor of the reservoir after secondary recovery is
between 35% and 45%.

Moving on to tertiary recovery also known as Enhanced Oil Recovery, it is used to improve the
mobility of the oil by reducing the viscosity of oil. This is achieved by enhancing oil

, displacement and volumetric sweep efficiency. Oil displacement efficiency is improved by
reducing viscosity or by reducing capillary forces or interfacial tension. There are a few methods
to achieve this, but according to the first assignment the selected EOR method was alkaline
flooding. It is an enhanced water flooding process where the pH of the water is altered to
increase the oil recovery.
