Teaching Plan for Deepa Singh
Introduction
Deepa Singh is a 15-year-old female with Down syndrome. She currently has limited

verbal communication and mainly communicates by pointing and gestures. The teaching plan

below targets to improve her communication skills and support independent functioning. She is

currently able to complete simple tasks with steps such as folding, sorting, and matching with

guidance, and is also learning vocational skills, and is yet to transition. This teaching plan will

incorporate visual schedules to guide her transition into daily activities and to support her

communication development (McDonald, 2021). The goal is to help her transition individually, as

well as communicate her needs and learn to independently organize her tasks.

Operational Definition
The target behavior in Deepa's case is to ensure she understands routine and can

communicate desired transitions by pointing, touching, or moving around cards. Liang et al. (2024)

define that visual schedules help individuals with Down syndrome understand their daily

schedules, which allows them to be more independent and responsible in completing daily tasks.

Response will be measured based on Deepa's ability to transition through the activities in

the chart, indicating the completed tasks and the tasks yet to be completed. A positive response

will be shown when she can point out the activities or transitions when prompted with a gesture.

For example, if she can point to teeth brushing after waking up in the morning or moving a card

to playing with peers as her intended next activity.

Goals
Within 6 weeks, Deepa will be able to use the visual schedule to communicate her task

schedule and to transition through daily activities, both at school, at home, and in the community.

A long-term goal is to ensure that Deepa independently utilizes her visual schedule to

undertake daily routines within 3 months.
