Math 139 Calculus I with Precalculus

Lecture Times and Locations: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 8:35 to
9:25 am at ENGMC 204 and Fridays 11:35-12:25 at MAASS 112.
Office Hours: I will hold several office hours every week. The teaching assis-
tants will hold office hours as well. Times/dates will be posted on MyCourses.
Course Description: Review of trigonometry and other Precalculus topics
(Exponentials,logarithms,etc). Limits, continuity, derivative. Differentiation of
elementary functions. Antidifferentiation. Applications.
Restrictions:
1) Not open to students who have taken CEGEP objective 00UN or equivalent.
2) Not open to students who have taken or are taking MATH 140 or MATH
150.
3) Not open to students who have taken or are taking MATH 122, except by
permission of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Required Course Material: “Calculus” (9th edition, Single Variable Calcu-
lus Early Transcendentals) by James Stewart.
This is the textbook that I will use to assign textbook exercises for practice.
Note that the same book will be used for Calculus 2 (MATH 141). An earlier
edition of the textbook is satisfactory as well, but the practice exercises will be
assigned according to the 9th edition textbook which has different numbering
and exercises than earlier editions.

Tutorials: The teaching assistants will hold weekly tutorial sessions on Mon-
days, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The tutorials start on Tuesday, September 3.
You are expected to attend.
Assignments: There will be webwork assignments assigned approximately ev-
ery 2 weeks. These are web-based assignments graded by the computer. The
solutions will be released shortly after the due dates. Extensions to homework
will not be given.
Midterm Exams: There will be two midterm exams:
• Midterm 1 : October 3 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm
• Midterm 2: November 5 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm
There will be makeup midterms for students who are unable to write a midterm
exam due to a valid reason.
Final Exam: There will be a 3 hour final exam during the final exam period
scheduled by the university.
Note that calculators will not be permitted on exams.

Rights, students in this course have the right to submit in English or in French
any written work that is to be graded.
Method of Evaluation: Your final grade will be the maximum of the following
three options:
• 15 % Webwork, 15 % Midterm 1 , 20 % Midterm 2, 50 % Final Exam
• 15 % Webwork, 10 % Midterm 1, 25 % Midterm 2, 50 % Final Exam
• 15 % Webwork, 85 % Final Exam

M-F from noon-5 PM in Burnside Hall room 911.
• Statistics Online for Students is a resource which offers online help on
statistics courses in the department. Click on the link above and you
will be added to a Microsoft Teams group where the schedule will be
announced.
• SUMS is the Society of Undergraduate Mathematics Students. Join their
Facebook group to get on their listserv, connect with other students in
the department, and participate in some of their activities/social events.
• Advising is an important resource to guide you throughout the duration
of your degree, and advisors can help with answering questions related to
your degree program. Check out the Department’s Advising Website to
find out how to get in touch with a Departmental Advisor, should you
need to do so.
• The Office for Mediation and Reporting is a McGill centralized office used
to file a formal report of discrimination, harassment, or sexual violence;
learn about policies and processes; or be connected to additional supports.
• The Office for Sexual Violence, Response, Support and Education provides
support for all members of the McGill community who have been impacted
by sexual violence (whether it be sexual harassment or assault, gender-
based or intimate partner violence, or cyberviolence) and works to foster
a culture of consent on campus and beyond.
• The Office of the Dean of Students (Case Management) is a collaborative
process between a student, a Case Manager, and other concerned parties
with the intention of improving the student’s academic and personal out-
comes. Case managers are trained in confidentiality, disclosures of sexual
violence, and mental health first aid.
