QUESTION 1 (25 marks)
1.1 Text from DBE Workbook (2 marks)
Selected Text: A narrative story from Grade 5 DBE English FAL Workbook titled "The
Soccer Match"
"Last Saturday, my friends and I played soccer at the community field. We arrived early
in the morning. The sun was shining brightly. Our team wore red shirts while the other
team wore blue shirts. I scored two goals during the match. Everyone cheered loudly
when we won. After the game, we celebrated with cold drinks and shared stories about
our favourite moments."
1.2 Two Specific LSCs (2 marks)
1. Simple Past Tense (regular and irregular verbs)
2. Adjectives (descriptive words)
1.3 Suitability of Text for Teaching Selected LSCs (4 marks)
This text is highly suitable for teaching the selected LSCs for the following reasons:
For Simple Past Tense: The narrative naturally uses multiple past tense verbs (played,
arrived, was shining, wore, scored, cheered, won, celebrated, shared), providing
, authentic examples of both regular (-ed endings) and irregular verbs. The story
structure allows learners to see how past tense creates a complete narrative about
finished actions.
For Adjectives: The text contains clear descriptive adjectives (early, brightly, red, blue,
two, loudly, cold, favourite) that modify nouns and enhance meaning. These adjectives
are contextually relevant and help learners understand how descriptive words make
writing more vivid and engaging.
1.4 Integrated Language Skills Activity (8 marks)
Approach: Text-Based Integrated Approach
Activity: "My Weekend Story Chain"
Listening:
• Play an audio recording of the soccer match story
• Learners listen for past tense verbs and adjectives
• They raise hands when they hear descriptive words
Speaking:
• Pair learners to discuss their own weekend activities
• Each learner orally shares one sentence using past tense (e.g., "I visited my
grandmother")
• Partners ask follow-up questions using past tense ("What did you do there?")
Reading:
• Learners read the text silently, then in pairs
• They underline all past tense verbs in one colour and circle adjectives in another
• Small groups read aloud different sections with expression
