This adaptation had its first professional performance at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith in September 2019. This extract is taken from Act 1, Scene 2 in The Courtyard. Niru Oh! I see, you mean Tom might find you work? Mrs Lahiri Yes. That was exactly what I was thinking. Niru He must, Krishna! Leave it with me. I will put it to him very skillfully. I do want to help you. Mrs Lahiri You are very kind. Especially as you have so 5 little experience of how hard life can be. Niru You’re like all the others. Think I am a spoilt child. Mrs Lahiri I didn’t mean to offend you. Niru I haven’t told you the really important thing. Mrs Lahiri What? 10 Niru You look down on me because you are proud that you worked so long and so hard for your mother aren’t you? Mrs Lahiri I don’t look down on anyone.
