Introduction
According to data analysis of previous state testing scores, it has been identified that a
need for improving reading skills and comprehension is needed at Public School # 3. In order to
effectively develop strategies and gain insights to address this need, I interviewed Mrs. Tara
Mantineo, principal of Public School # 3. The purpose of this interview was to gain an
understanding in curriculum development, auditing, data-driven decision-making, and
professional development. The interview was also meant to help understand how these
components can be used to improve ELA skills in our students.

Questions
Question 1: How do you assure that teachers are following curriculum guidelines?
According to Mrs. Tara Mantineo, curriculum guidelines are assured through grade level
meetings and collaboration with the content supervisors to make sure teachers are following the
curriculum. The supervisors do the majority of the legwork through the scope and sequence and
then they discuss it with the principals to follow through. We also conduct benchmark
assessments to show where the students are and guarantee that the curriculum is being followed.
Question 2: Do you keep up with the changes of grade level standards? How?
According to Tara, yes, we do keep up with the changes of grade level standards. Our
assistant superintendent, Mrs. Olivero is in charge of curriculum and she reviews it every
summer and then it is passed down to the content supervisors and principals at the superintendent
council meeting. The meeting contains topics of changes in the curriculum, updates, and every
few years the standards are updated. The changes can be in-house as well, the state gives
standards and we fine-tune them through different series or pilot programs for different content
