Overview and rationale
Physical activity (PA) in school settings is a major public-health and educational lever: it
improves health and—contrary to common concern—does not harm academic outcomes and
may improve them. Reviews and umbrella reviews show generally positive or neutral effects of
school-based PA on academic achievement and cognitive outcomes; moderate-to-vigorous PA
(MVPA) and programmes adding substantial weekly minutes show the clearest benefits. PMC+1
1. Evidence that PA supports academic performance
An umbrella review and multiple systematic reviews conclude PA is at worst neutral and often
beneficial for academic outcomes—especially numeracy and executive functions—when
programmes add time or intensity (e.g., ≥90 min/week or 30–60 min per session at MVPA).
