ditions known to help meet the needs of emergency vehi-
cle driving conditions known to exist within our police ser-
vice area. Each exercise is progressive, building one skill
upon another to permit a complete spectrum of precision
driving skills to be learned.
This course of instruction has been prepared for oflcers
involved in the emergency operation of a police vehicle

APD Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) Princi- Further, it is designed to reduce the frequency of police
ples vehicle accidents by improving oflcer attitudes and skill
levels. The instruction in this course is NOT designed to
develop racing drivers. Police driving problems are com-
pletely different. We do not intend to teach students how
to drive. What we DO intend to teach is the safe operation
of emergency vehicles, specifically police vehicles, when
,confronted with a hazard or emergency.
, This course is divided into two parts, the first being a
'classroom' portion, in which students will be instructed on
law, liability, safety, and precision driving techniques. The
second portion will consist of hands-on course exercises
with the intent of learning to apply new knowledge and
skills while controlling a vehicle through a designated
problem.
