This is my book analysis that I wrote in HAVO 5 of one of Roald Dahl's most fun short stories. You can use this effect to learn oral English, for example! Enjoy reading.

Short story review: Parson’s pleasure - HAVO 5 my own full Analysis

A ) Answer the following questions in English:

1
A ) Roald Dahl
B ) Roald Dahl was a British author who wrote many children’s books and short
stories. Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Wales as a kid of two Norwegian parents.
Most of his stories contain an interesting dark sense of humour. Besides al this he
also was a fighter pilot, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force which would have drastic
effects on his life. Furthermore, he also used to be a spy. Many of his books became
quite famous, but as number one we have ‘’Sjakie and the chocolate factory’’. He
inspired many kids and people around him. His books are full of imagination and
humorous fantasies which most kids absolutely love. Eventually he also wrote the
short story called ‘’Parson’s pleasure’’ which I will be analysing today. Roald Dahl
passed away in 1990, he died being 74 years old.

A ) Parson’s Pleasure
B ) Yes I think the title does fit the story because the main character of the story is a
parson, named Mr. Boggis.
C ) In my opinion, it is title fits the story pretty well. When I saw the title of the story
for the first time I did not really understand what they meant, but eventually when I
was reading the story I finally understood how ironic the title actually was.
D ) A paper version with information which I gathered months back.

3
A ) Parson’s pleasure was published in April 1958.
B ) I think Parson’s pleasure is quite significant for its time, taking into consideration
its written in 1958 and the actual story takes place in the 1950s or 60s. It’s intriguing
to see that some people fall for his ‘’mind games’’ very easily and other people don’t.
I also found it interesting to see the big difference between the people who lived in
the countryside and the people who lived in the cityfolk. In the 1960s the line
between fiction, novels, and stories was very thin. Stories with irony in it became
popular, Parson’s pleasure was one of these stories.
