the swimming lanes technique). A swimlane diagram is a
flowchart that visually distinguishes between the different
responsibilities for a subprocess within a process. A swim
lane can be displayed both horizontally and vertically. The
difference with other process modeling techniques is that
activities and decisions are visually grouped by placing
them in the same lane. Parallel lines divide the schedule
into lanes, with each person or group having their own
lane.
Makigami is the Japanese word for 'roll of paper'. It is an
instrument to quickly and clearly visualize value addition. A
Makigami not only visualizes the process steps, but also the
information used, the time required, the added value and
the waste. By mapping the process in this way, bottlenecks
quickly become visible.
A Makigami is especially useful in organizations where the
'product' or process is not immediately visible (read:
administrative information-intensive processes). Fewer
symbols are used when creating a Makigami than when
using Value Stream Mapping. This means that this
technique is easier to apply than creating a Value Stream
Map (VSM).
SIPOC is an acronym for Supplier, Input, Process, Output
and Customer. A SIPOC describes the process in broad
terms and is a tool for identifying all relevant parts of the
