Anatomy Assessed: Breasts: Glandular tissue, adipose tissue, and fibrous connective tissue. Assessment of all 4 quadrants of each breast, nipple-areola, complex, and tail of Spence. Leaning forward Palpation: Palpate for masses, enlargement, or tenderness while the patient is sittingPlace the patient in a supine position with a pillow or towel under the shoulder to flatten the breast. Using the pads of the first three fingers, palpate the entire breast in a concentric circular pattern, vertical strip, or wedge. Palpate all breast tissue from the clavicle to the 7th rib and from the sternum to the mid-axillary line. Palpate the nipples for masses or discharge. Record the characteristics of any discharge including quantity, consistency, and color. Repeat for the other breast.
