TEACHING PRACTICE II BEd (Intermediate Phase:
GRADES 4 – 6)
ASSIGNMENT 50: PORTFOLIO

,QUESTION ONE – CONTEXTUAL QUESTIONNAIRE

1. School Description
I completed my practical teaching at a public primary school located in a semi-
urban township in South Africa. The school has been in existence for over 30
years and serves learners from predominantly working-class families in the
surrounding community. The school has approximately 850 learners enrolled,
with 25 teachers and two administrative staff members. It offers Grades R to 7,
and the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT) is English, although
many learners speak African languages such as isiZulu, Sesotho, and
Xitsonga at home. The school has basic facilities, including 20 classrooms, a
computer lab with limited devices, a library, a small sports field, and an
administration block. While resources are modest, the school leadership
strives to create a supportive learning environment through community
engagement and partnerships.

2. Classroom Description
The classroom where I did my practical teaching was a moderately sized
room that accommodated about 40 learners. It was equipped with desks,
chairs, a chalkboard, and a teacher’s workstation. There were a few posters
on the walls that displayed learning content, such as multiplication tables and
reading strategies, which created a visually engaging atmosphere. The
classroom had good ventilation and adequate natural light, although it lacked
modern teaching technology like smartboards. The available teaching support
materials included textbooks, workbooks, and some manipulatives for
mathematics. Despite the limited resources, the atmosphere was positive and
warm, with learners showing respect for their peers and teachers.

3. Learner Description
The learners I taught were in Grade 4, with approximately 38 learners in the
class. Most learners were eager to learn and demonstrated a good level of
readiness, although there were a few who needed extra support due to
learning difficulties or language barriers. The learners came from diverse
home environments; many lived in households with limited financial resources,
and some relied on the school’s nutrition programme for daily meals.
Participation levels varied, with some learners being very active during
lessons while others were more reserved. Group work and interactive
activities helped improve engagement and participation for all learners.

,4. Mentor/Subject Teacher Description
My mentor teacher was an experienced educator with over 15 years of
teaching in the Foundation and Intermediate Phases. She demonstrated a
deep understanding of the curriculum and effective classroom management
strategies. She was approachable, supportive, and provided clear guidance
throughout my teaching practice. She shared valuable tips on lesson planning,
learner assessment, and differentiation strategies. Her mentorship was
instrumental in helping me grow as a teacher, as she encouraged reflection
after each lesson and offered constructive feedback to improve my
instructional skills.
