2. Summary (Easy Words, Pointwise)
• The story is set during the Franco-Prussian War (1870‒71) when France lost to Prussia (now Germany).
• The province of Alsace and Lorraine came under German rule.
• Franz, a little boy, is late to school. He is scared because he didn t learn his French lesson.
• Surprisingly, his teacher M. Hamel is not angry but sad.
• Hamel announces: This is our last French lesson. From tomorrow, only German will be taught in
schools.
• The villagers also attend the class to show respect and sadness for losing their language.
• Hamel praises French language: It is the most beautiful, clear, logical language.
• Franz regrets not learning French properly and realizes the importance of mother tongue.
• At the end, Hamel, full of emotion, writes on the blackboard: Vive La France! (Long live France!).
