how to test the olfactory nerve
Block one nostril at a time, have pt close eyes, and use alcohol wipe and have pt guess
the smell
how to test the Optic nerve
Use snellen chart and have the pt tell you what is the smallest line they can read
how to test the oculomotor nerve
Have pt follow pen in a "X" movement
how to test the trochlear nerve
Have pt follow a pen with just there eyes back and forth and up and down
how to test trigeminal nerve
Using a cotton swab, have the pt close their eyes, and start touching the face with the
cotton swab and have the pt tell you where you are touching
how to test abducens nerve
Have pt follow pen in an up and down motion
how to test facial nerve
Have the patient smile, frown, and move eyebrows up and down
how to test vestibulocochlear nerve
Talk into one ear and rub fingers outside the other, then switch and do the same
how to test glossopharyngeal nerve
Have pt swallow
How to test the vagus nerve
Have pt swallow, and pt should be able to speak coherently
How to test the spinal accessory nerve
Have pt shrug there shoulders

Have pt stick out tongue and move it
