Human Resource Functions refer to the key activities and responsibilities carried out by
the HR department to support the management of people within an organisation.
Identify the HR function that is described in each of the following scenarios. Provide a
justification for each of your answers:
1.1 Yolandi is an HR officer at a large manufacturing company in South Africa.
She works closely with senior management to ensure that the company’s human
resource needs are aligned with its long-term business goals. As part of her role,
she conducts regular assessments to identify current workforce capabilities and
anticipate future staffing requirements. Yolandi ensures that the organisation is
neither overstaffed nor understaffed by making sure the right people with the
right skills are in the right roles at the right time. This process helps link the
company’s human resource management efforts with its overall strategic plan.
1.1 HR function:
Strategic Human Resource Planning (SHRP).
Yolandi is forecasting future staffing needs, assessing current workforce capabilities
and aligning people with long-term business goals so the organisation has the right
, number of skilled people in the right roles at the right time. This is the core purpose of
SHRP.
1.2 HR function
Job Analysis & Job Design.
Alenda is analysing how work is structured (tasks, task variety, decision-making
autonomy) and redesigning roles to balance challenge and responsibility to improve
productivity and satisfaction which is job analysis followed by job design.
1.3 HR function
Orientation / Onboarding (Induction).
Solomon is preparing an employee handbook and a welcome programme to socialise
new hires into policies, culture, expectations and colleagues so they become productive
and confident from day one, the essence of onboarding.
1.4 HR function
Performance Management & Appraisal.
Sadika’s regular one-on-one reviews, performance assessments, feedback and
development guidance are core activities of performance management and appraisal
systems.
