One critical issue in higher education is the learning challenges faced by students with dyslexia, a specific learning disorder that affects reading, writing, and comprehension. In South Africa, inclusive education policies encourage access to higher education for students with diverse needs, yet many students with dyslexia continue to experience academic underperformance due to limited access to assistive technologies and inadequate institutional support (Engelbrecht & de Beer, 2018). The research problem addressed in this study is the extent to which assistive technology enhances the academic performance of students with dyslexia in South African higher education institutions. While existing literature highlights the benefits of digital tools such as text-to-speech software, dictation systems, and learning management platforms (Al-Azawei et al., 2017), little research has been conducted in the South African context, where resource constraints and inequality may affect the accessibility and impact of such tools.
