Gender Stereotypes and Their Implications for Intergender Relations
1. Introduction
Gender stereotypes are preconceived ideas whereby males and females are arbitrarily assigned
characteristics and roles determined and limited by their gender. These stereotypes are deeply
embedded in culture, media, religion, education, and family structures, shaping how people
view themselves and others. While some stereotypes may seem harmless or even flattering,
they often contribute to misunderstanding, inequality, and tension between genders.
2. Common Gender Stereotypes
Male Stereotypes:
Emotionally stoic
Aggressive or dominant
Logical, not emotional
Breadwinners/providers
Uninterested in caregiving or domestic work
Female Stereotypes:
Emotionally sensitive
