HED4804
Assignment 5
Unique No:
Due 15 September 2025

, Philosophy in Education
1. Introduction

My development as an aspiring educator has been strongly influenced by my academic
journey, exposure to varied learning environments, and my personal dedication to
lifelong learning. My professional goal is to contribute to the South African higher
education sector, with a particular focus on promoting inclusive, transformative, and
socially responsive education. In a society still marked by historical inequality and
present socio-economic challenges, I view teaching as a powerful instrument for
empowerment, social mobility, and redress.

For me, the responsibility of an educator goes beyond simply transferring knowledge. It
also involves cultivating critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of agency in learners so
that they may actively shape their futures and communities. I consider the development
of a personal teaching and learning philosophy essential because it provides a coherent
foundation for my professional practice. It not only anchors my values and strategies but
also encourages ongoing reflection, responsiveness to diverse learner needs, and
alignment with the broader educational imperatives of equity, inclusion, and social
transformation.

2. Teaching and Learning Philosophy Statement

I hold the view that education should produce critical, reflective, and empowered
individuals capable of participating meaningfully in society. While the dissemination of
knowledge is important, true education should extend beyond this and encourage
learners to ask questions, explore alternatives, innovate, and design solutions to
pressing real-world challenges. My role as an educator, therefore, is not to dictate
knowledge but to facilitate learning experiences that bridge theory and practice,
enabling students to construct knowledge through active engagement rather than
passive reception (Vygotsky, 1978).
