In the following case studies, there will be a review of the presenting issues. Counselors
work with clients to determine the appropriate assessments, diagnostic criteria, and how several
areas of the client’s life contribute to the presenting issues. It is important that the counselor take
many factors into account such as culturally appropriate assessments, the biological,
psychological, and sociocultural aspects of the client and how these areas contribute to the
presenting issues. There will also be a review of the diagnostic criteria for the stated diagnosis of
the client and any referrals or medications recommended for the treatment of the client.
Presenting Concerns: Case One: Jenny
Jenny is a 29-year-old, single, bi-sexual female and presents with issues regarding her
recent breakup, moving back in with her mother, and feeling unmotivated to socialize. Jenny
describes the breakup with her boyfriend as amicable and that they “just weren’t enjoying being
together”. Jenny works as a bank teller and makes a modest income, enough to provide some
financial assistance to her mother in keeping the household. Jenny also states that she has no
interest in socializing and has come to counseling at the urging of her mother because Barbara is
concerned that Jenny is “giving up on life” but that Jenny can just “snap out of it”.
Jenny states that her mother believes that if she were to just go out and do things then she
would get better and find more motivation to socialize. Jenny also states that she feels there is no
point in going out or talking to people because she doesn’t want to be there in the first place so
there is nothing to talk about. Jenny states that she spends much of her time when she is not at
work in bed or sleeping, she has very low interest in eating. Jenny states that she doesn’t eat
much because she doesn’t feel hungry and that she is tired all the time, that it is difficult for her
just to make it through her workday.
Jenny states that she has tried to talk to her mother about how she is feeling but her
