Question 1: Define Emotional Intelligence (EI) and describe its components
Definition of Emotional Intelligence (EI):
Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to the capacity to recognize, interpret, and regulate
one’s own emotions while simultaneously perceiving, understanding, and influencing the
emotions of others. This multidimensional construct, advanced by Daniel Goleman
(1995), extends beyond cognitive intelligence (IQ) by emphasizing interpersonal
sensitivity, emotional regulation, and adaptive functioning. EI equips individuals to
navigate complex social environments, build meaningful relationships, and manage
stress effectively. Increasingly, research affirms EI as a critical determinant of academic
achievement, professional success, and psychological well-being.
Components of Emotional Intelligence:
EI comprises five interrelated components, each integral to holistic emotional
functioning:
1. Self-awareness – the foundation of EI, involving the ability to recognize and
understand one’s emotional states and their impact on thoughts and behavior.
For example, Thabo may recognize his frustration during classroom disruptions
as linked to anxieties rooted in instability at home. Such awareness allows for
constructive self-reflection and improved emotional monitoring.
