Unit 8: Practical Team Sports
Assignment 1 - Skills, Techniques and Tactics Required in Two Team Sports

P1 Describe skills, techniques and tactics required in two different team sports

Explain skills, techniques and tactics required in two different team sports
M1

M1:
Sport 1: Rugby
Skills used:
One skill that is required in rugby is knowing where to run before you receive the ball. This is usually known
as running lines in rugby. It is where you run away from the ball to drag the defender out and then quickly
cut back in and receive the ball in space. This allows the player to create a line break.
Another skill that is required in rugby is knowing what type of pass to do. The passes that they can do are
pop passes, push passes or spin passes. Pop passes are used when a player is running onto the ball and
they need to receive it close to you. Push passes are used when the player is close to you and is running in
a line to you. A spin pass is used when the player is far away and you need to get the ball to him as quickly
as possible.
Techniques used:
One technique that is used in rugby is tackling. This technique is used in defence to stop the attacker from
getting past you. To complete a good tackle, you have to set your feet close to the attacker and then bend
down, make contact with your shoulder, wrap your arms around their legs and finally drive your legs to get
them to the floor.
Another technique that is used in rugby is scrummaging. This is used by forwards who are a part of the
scrums. To be great at scrummaging, you have to get a good body position which is known as the ‘tower of
power’. This is where your legs are at a 90 degree angle, your back is straight and you pull your scapula
back so that they are touching each other.
Tactics used:
One tactic that is used in rugby is a blitz defence. This usually occurs when your defence is very fast and/or
the other team is slow at passing. It is where the defenders line up the first few attackers whilst a ruck is
happening and when the ball is passed out, the defenders sprint up to the attackers so that they are under
more pressure.
Another tactic that is used in rugby is the 3 on 2 attack. This is an attacking tactic that is used when there is
3 attackers against 2 defenders. It is where the first attacker draws the first defender to him and passes it
to the second man who does the same thing so the third person is open and can run past the defence.
