Music plays a vital role in the Foundation Phase, where
children’s natural engagement with sound, rhythm, and
movement can be transformed into structured learning.
Toddlers initially develop musical skills through listening and
imitation, as Gordon’s Music Learning Theory suggests. This is
evident when children hum simplified versions of songs like
“Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” They also develop through
movement and play—clapping, drumming, and dancing—
which Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences frames as
expressions of both musical and bodily-kinaesthetic
intelligence.
In the classroom, music supports numeracy by reinforcing
counting, sequencing, and problem-solving. Songs like One,
Two, Buckle My Shoe combine rhythm, action, and
mathematics. For literacy, music strengthens phonological
awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension. For example,
clapping syllables in words like banana enhances phonemic
awareness while also engaging rhythm. Music also nurtures
social and emotional growth, helping learners regulate
emotions, build confidence, and work cooperatively.
