Due date: 25 September 2025
SECTION 1: PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT IN REAL-LIFE CONTEXTS
a) Context
I selected the educational context, specifically career counselling in a high school setting.
b) Real-life situation
In Grade 9, a relative of mine had to choose subjects for the senior phase of school. The
school offered career counselling services where learners completed several psychological
assessments. These included aptitude tests, interest inventories, and personality
questionnaires designed to help learners match their strengths and preferences to suitable
subjects and possible career paths. The assessments were administered by an educational
psychologist in collaboration with the school counsellor. The process provided a structured
way for learners and their parents to make informed decisions about subject selection. From
observation, the learners received feedback sessions where their test results were explained

make informed decisions about subject selection. From observation, the learners
received feedback sessions where their test results were explained in simple terms.
The psychologist highlighted the importance of combining test results with personal
interests and values. This experience demonstrated how psychological assessments
are used in everyday educational settings to guide learners in their academic and
career development.

b)
In addition to the above materials, I drew on personal observation when my relative
participated in a school-based career counselling process during Grade 9 subject
choice. I observed how the assessments were administered and how the results
were discussed in the feedback session. I also gained insight through a conversation
with a school counsellor, who explained the role of aptitude and interest
assessments in helping learners align their subject choices with possible career
directions. To ensure confidentiality, no names of individuals or institutions are
mentioned here, but the information provided was practical and helped me
understand how testing is applied in real-life educational contexts.
Question 3
a) Who was tested and what was the reason for testing in this situation?
Learners in Grade 9 were tested as part of the school’s career counselling
programme. The reason for testing was to assist learners in making informed subject
choices for the senior phase of schooling. The assessments were intended to
highlight learners’ aptitudes, interests, and personality traits to ensure that their
chosen subjects aligned with future study and career options (Foxcroft & Roodt,
2018).
b) Who administered the test/s and are they qualified to do so? Justify your
answer.
