Process Innovation Strategy Worksheet
Instructions:
In keeping with step 5 of McKenzie & Pinger's six-step model described in An Introduction to
Community & Public Health, you must select a focus for your process innovation based on
the information gathered so far. This focus will provide the first criterion for narrowing
process innovation options. Use this worksheet to decide which process innovation might be
the most successful in Chinle.
1. Formulate process innovation options. Describe your purpose for the process
innovation and the reason for selecting it. Refer to the "Community Needs
Assessment Worksheet" and the Chinle Service Unit Profile provided in the course to
inform your answer. Enter your response below.
The purpose of the 3 innovations I choose is to prevent and treat obesity in the Navajo
community. The first is a state-funded wearable device with an activity sensor to track
activities and give reminders to move every hour. The second is gamification,
introducing physical games. Have elders teach traditional physical games, and the young
teach current physical games to the community. This will engage the different
generations to interact and encourage physical activity. The third is to bring healthy fo od
options to the 13 gas stations that most of the community utilizes.
2. Describe three process innovations. Describe three options for improving the
healthcare delivery process for addressing obesity issues in Chinle. Draw on the case
studies provided in the course to find ideas. Use the "Five Imperatives for Improving
Healthcare" resource provided in the course to select high-impact approaches. Use
Health care disruption: Thinking broadly about regulation and innovation provided in
the course to direct your innovations toward creating a culture of innovation and
using ideas from other industries. Enter your response below.
1. Physical activity tracking device: many individuals will get focused on their TV shows,
video games, or other activities and not realize they have not moved within an hour or
more. Just getting up and moving once an hour can increase one's health. A wearable device
such as a bracelet, only needs the basic step counting and activity sensor.
2. The Navajo community has strong bonds and can be brought together at schools,
community centers, and other outreach to teach how to play physical games for past and
present times.
3. Many Navajo communities get groceries at the gas station due to lack of transportation or
distance. Bringing healthier options to the gas stations will allow the community access to
healthier options
3. Compare the three options by describing how each meets the following
criteria and enter your responses in the table below:
a. addresses urgent need (relevant)
b. uses available resources (feasible)
c. integrates cultural considerations (sensitive)

4. Assess community impacts. Using Miller's Impact Assessment Framework, assess
the impact of the three different innovation options. Describe two likely outcomes in
each of the three dimensions in the left column.
