BTE2601 Assignment 5 PORTFOLIO 2025 (Answer Guide) - DUE 8 October 2025 1.1 Introduction The teaching profession in South Africa is guided by a broad and well-defined set of roles that extend beyond classroom instruction. This portfolio explores the seven official roles of educators as outlined by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET, 2015). These roles include being a specialist in a phase, subject, discipline, or practice; a learning mediator; an interpreter and designer of learning programmes and materials; a leader, administrator, and manager; a scholar, researcher, and lifelong learner; an assessor; and finally, a community, citizenship, and pastoral role. Together, these roles provide a holistic view of what it means to be a teacher in a democratic and transforming education system. The portfolio consists of three major components. The first is a literature review, which defines and explains each role from a theoretical perspective with support from academic sources. The second includes interviews with practising teachers, where their lived experiences and practices are presented to show how these roles are enacted in real school environments. The third is personal reflections, which allow me to consider what these roles mean for my own development as a future teacher and how I plan to apply them in practice. Understanding these multiple roles is crucial for professional growth and effectiveness. A teacher is not simply a transmitter of knowledge but also a facilitator, leader, assessor, and mentor. By critically engaging with the literature, listening to the experiences of practising teachers, and reflecting on my own learning journey, this portfolio seeks to provide a balanced and comprehensive analysis of the complex responsibilities placed on educators.
