The oneness of God (Tawhid)
- Monotheistic- believe there is only one god
- Believe in the supremacy of God’s will (is above all things)
- Tawhid is a fundamental belief in Islam
- Surah 112 shows there is only one god, undivided being, always existed, not born, no
children, unique, no other person has God's qualities/attributes, no picture accurate.
Belief in Tawhid means muslims should
- Worship only one god
- Never make anything in their lives more important than god- has no equal
- Not use images/pictures - impossible to portray god accurately
The supremacy of god's will
- Muslims believe god's will is supreme (most powerful)
- God can make anything happen
- Nothing happens unless god allows it to happen
- Gives muslim confidence- know it is parts of god's plan
- Muslims try to live everyday life according to god's will as god knows best
Sunni islam
- Leader (caliph) should be elected
- Only Quran and sunnah have authority to provide religious guidance
- Abu Bakr (muhammad’s advisor) was rightful leader
- Believe in same God, follow Quran, teachings sunnah, acknowledge importance of prophets
6 articles of faith
- Tawhid → one god
- Angels → who passed on god’s message to prophets
- Holy books → Quran has highest authority in Islam
- Prophets → respect for them, especially muhammad (received final revelation)
- Day of Judgement → at the end of world, everyone will be judged by God
- Supremacy of God’s will → nothing happens unless God wants it to happen
Shi’a Islam
- Leader (Imam) should be a descendant of muhammad and chosen by God
- Quran, sunnah and Shi’a leaders have authority to provide religious guidance
- Ali (Muhammad cousin/ son-in-law) was rightful leader
- Believe in same God, follow Quran, teachings sunnah, acknowledge importance of prophets
5 roots of Usul ad din
- Tawhid → one god
- Prophethood → respect for them, especially muhammad (received final revelation)
- Justice of God (Adalat) → God will judge everyone on day of judgment fairly/just
- Will hold them accountable for their actions
- Imamate → respect for 12 imams (chosen by god to lead islam after muhammad)
- Resurrection → after death, muslims will be resurrected

- God has 99 different names (from quran and hadiths) - describe his characteristics
- Helps to Give muslims some idea of what God is like
- God is great and beyond human understanding
- Immanent → nearby and we can feel His presence
- Transcendent → completely different to us and outside our world, never fully understood
- Omnipotent → all-powerful
- Beneficent → the most loving
- Merciful →
- Fair and Just → judges everyone equally
Nature of angels
- Spiritual beings who serve God, pass on his word to people through prophets
- Created by god from light
- Constantly serve/praise god
- Have no free will - can only do what God wants
- Are pure and sinless
- Able to take on human form to give messages to people
Role of angels
- Act as messengers of God
- Take care of people
- Record everything a person does (in book of deeds)
- Take people souls to God
Angel Jibril
- Angel of revelation
- Revealed the Quran to Muhammad
- Purified Muhammad’s heart when he was a child - so can receive revelation
- Recited the Quran to prophet and guided him through his life (passed on all god’s messages)
- Played important role in communicating the final version of Islam
Angel Mikail
- Angel of Mercy
- Rewards people who do good deeds
- Responsible for rain, thunder and lightning
- Provides nourishment to earth, helps provide food (through rain)
