, 1.1 Introduction
This portfolio critically examines the multifaceted roles of educators within the South
African context, guided by the seven key roles articulated in national education policy. It
is both reflective and analytical, aiming to demonstrate how teachers embody these
roles in ways that advance effective teaching and meaningful learning. Central to this
exploration is the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) Policy on the
Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications (MRTEQ) (2015), which
builds upon earlier frameworks such as the Norms and Standards for Educators (2000).
The MRTEQ policy underscores that teachers must competently integrate seven
interrelated roles in order to respond to the diverse needs of learners, thereby ensuring
quality, equity, and transformation within South African education.
These roles are defined as: (1) specialist in a phase, subject, discipline, or practice; (2)
learning mediator; (3) interpreter and designer of learning programmes and materials;
(4) leader, administrator, and manager; (5) scholar, researcher, and lifelong learner; (6)
assessor; and (7) community, citizenship, and pastoral role. Together, they highlight that
teaching extends beyond the transmission of knowledge to encompass facilitation,
leadership, assessment, research, and community engagement. In an era characterised
by rapid educational shifts—including inclusive education reforms, curriculum
transformation, and technological integration—grasping these roles equips teachers to
navigate challenges such as learner diversity, socio-economic inequality, and limited
resources.
The portfolio is structured to provide a systematic engagement with each role. First, a
theoretical perspective is presented, grounded in academic literature and policy
documents. This is followed by insights derived from interviews with an in-service
teacher, providing a practice-based lens on how these roles are enacted in real
classrooms. Finally, each section includes a personal reflection, demonstrating how
these roles inform my identity, growth, and aspirations as a future educator. The
portfolio concludes by synthesising the seven roles, reaffirming their
interconnectedness, and committing to embodying them in professional practice.
