Assignment 3
Due 2025
, Safety Management III B
1. Explain how a corporate’s image can be affected by accidents and injuries. (10)
A company’s public image is one of its most valuable assets, as it shapes how clients,
employees, investors, regulators, and communities perceive the organisation.
Workplace accidents and injuries can cause significant harm to this reputation in several
ways:
Adverse Media Coverage: News of workplace incidents spreads quickly through
traditional and social media. If these incidents suggest weak safety standards,
the organisation may be portrayed as negligent or unconcerned about employee
welfare.
Loss of Stakeholder Confidence: Customers, suppliers, and business partners
expect companies to operate responsibly. Serious accidents may damage this
trust, causing stakeholders to distance themselves from the business.
Legal and Regulatory Fallout: Investigations, lawsuits, and fines often follow
workplace accidents. Such outcomes reinforce a negative image of the company
as being non-compliant or careless with safety obligations.
Impact on Employer Brand: A reputation for poor safety discourages potential
applicants from seeking employment and can push existing staff to leave for
safer workplaces. This hampers recruitment and retention efforts.
Investor Apprehension: Shareholders and potential investors may view
frequent accidents as signs of poor governance and weak risk management,
which can reduce investment confidence and harm financial performance.
Strained Community Relations: In cases where accidents extend beyond
employees—such as environmental damage or harm to nearby communities—
the company’s social licence to operate may be threatened.
In summary, accidents and injuries can undermine an organisation’s reputation by
projecting it as unsafe and irresponsible, which negatively affects goodwill, market
credibility, and long-term sustainability.
