HOW TO SUMMARIZE ARTICLE EFFECTIVELY

A. Purpose:
● To demonstrate understanding of the text.
● To capture main ideas and supporting points.

B. Requirements:

You must use your own words to summarize by following these strategies:

● Use synonyms and antonyms.
● Change passive and active voice.
● Change parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc).
 E.g: consume → consumption
  accumulate → accumulation
● Change the orders of the information.
● Express the same concept or information by paraphrasing and summarizing.
 E.g: provide → introduce / recommend / claim / list and describe
  grab → take / increase / consume / accumulate
● Use the third person perspective.
E.g: “the author,” “the writer” or he/him/she/her (not “I” or “we” or “you”).
● Use simple words.
● Have clear structure (Have topic sentences, main ideas, transitions, etc).
● DO NOT change key words and proper nouns.
● DO NOT write the exact number or percentage because they contain minor details.
● DO NOT share your own experience.
● DO NOT “in conclusion/ to sum up/ etc” at the end.
● DO NOT use “says” (as in “The author says”); instead use more formal reporting verbs
(verbs of attribution) in the simple present tense:
E.g: states, discusses, asserts, notes, observes, maintains, expresses, reports,
describes, contends, argues, etc.
