1.1 Introduction
Teaching is a multifaceted profession that extends far beyond
delivering content in the classroom. The Department of Higher
Education and Training (DHET) Minimum Requirements for
Teacher Education Qualifications (2015) outlines seven critical
roles that define the work of professional educators in South Africa.
These roles reflect the expectation that teachers must not only
specialise in their subject areas but also act as mediators of learning,
interpreters of curricula, leaders and managers, lifelong learners,
assessors, and contributors to community and pastoral care.

perspectives: (1) theoretical definitions informed by scholarly
