Question 1 1.1. Give a detailed description (in your own words) of the learner-centred method that you will advise Mr Naidoo to use and justify why you have chosen this method in the context of the Grade 9 class given above. 1.2. Evaluate (using practical examples) how Mr Naidoo will use the method you have chosen to practically deliver the Grade 9 lesson on the topic “Entrepreneurship: Sectors of the economy”, by implementing your pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). Your explanation should indicate a well-rounded PCK by referring to the teaching and learning strategy as well as the subject content.

, 1.1. Description and Justification of Project-Based Learning
I would advise Mr. Naidoo to use the Project-Based Learning (PBL) method.
PBL is a dynamic, learner-centred approach where students gain knowledge and skills by
actively working on a real-world problem or challenge over an extended period. Instead of
passively receiving information from the teacher, students engage in a hands-on investigation,
collaborating to solve a complex, authentic problem or answer a challenging question. The
process culminates in the creation of a tangible "product" or presentation that is shared with
others. The teacher's role shifts from an instructor to a facilitator or "guide on the side."
I have chosen this method for Mr. Naidoo's Grade 9 class for the following reasons:
• Promotes Deeper Understanding: At the Grade 9 level, students need to move
beyond rote memorization. PBL forces them to research, analyse, and apply the
concept of economic sectors to a real-world context, leading to a much deeper and
more lasting understanding.
• Highly Engaging: The topic of entrepreneurship is practical and relatable. By turning
the lesson into a project, Mr. Naidoo will capture the students' interest and make the
learning experience active and exciting, rather than passive.
• Develops Essential Skills: This method naturally fosters critical thinking, problem-
solving, collaboration, communication, and research skills—all of which are crucial
for success in the 21st century and in their future academic and professional lives.
• Relevance to the Subject: The topic "Sectors of the economy" is perfectly suited for
a project-based approach. It allows students to directly connect abstract economic
concepts to the businesses and services they see in their daily lives, making the
subject matter highly relevant and meaningful.

1.2. Practical Application of the Method (PCK)
Mr. Naidoo will implement Project-Based Learning to deliver the lesson on
"Entrepreneurship: Sectors of the economy" by integrating his pedagogical content
knowledge (PCK). This involves knowing how to teach the specific content to these
particular learners using a chosen strategy.
Teaching and Learning Strategy: The PBL Process
Mr. Naidoo will structure the lesson around the following steps:
1. Introduce the Driving Question: Instead of beginning with a lecture, Mr. Naidoo
will pose a compelling, real-world challenge to the class: "You are a team of young
entrepreneurs. Your task is to develop a business plan for a new, small business that
could thrive in our local community. As part of your plan, you must clearly identify
