Assignment 1
Due 2025
, Introduction to Crime Information Management Systems for Policing
QUESTION 1
Discuss five types of questions police officials could use to gather information,
with examples.
1. Open-ended questions
Purpose: These allow the respondent to explain events in their own words,
providing detailed information without being restricted.
Example: “Can you describe what you saw happen during the incident?”
2. Closed-ended questions
Purpose: Used to confirm facts and usually require short, direct answers such as
yes or no.
Example: “Did the suspect enter through the front door?”
3. Probing questions
Purpose: Follow up on a person’s earlier response to obtain clarification or more
detail.
Example: “You said you noticed a car—can you recall its colour or model?”
4. Leading questions
Purpose: These guide the respondent towards a certain answer and should be
asked carefully to avoid bias.
Example: “The suspect had a scar on his face, didn’t he?”
5. Hypothetical questions
