Volgens Van Graan en Cochrane (2018:76) vorm lees ’n basis vir kinders se kognitiewe,
emosionele en sosiale ontwikkeling. Die kortverhaal “Mielieman” deur Jaco Jacobs bied
verskeie geleenthede vir die ontwikkeling van sulke vaardighede. Drie spesifieke
vaardighede wat jong lesers kan ontwikkel deur die lees van hierdie verhaal, sluit in

1. Kognitiewe vaardighede (probleemoplossing en kritiese denke)
