1. Write a short paragraph in which you describe what is depicted on the cartoon.
The cartoon shows a group of people sitting outside under a tree while a woman teaches them using
a small blackboard. The blackboard has simple drawings, but the learning space is not a proper
classroom. On the tree, there is a big sign that says “Right to Education,” but the reality is that the
people are learning in poor conditions. This cartoon highlights that even though education is a basic
right, many communities do not have proper facilities, teachers, or resources to support real learning
(UNESCO, 2017).

2. What message does the cartoon convey? Give a reason for your answer by
referring to the cartoon.
The cartoon gives the message that having the “right to education” is not enough if it is not
supported in real life. Even though the law says people should get education, many learners still
study in poor conditions, like sitting under a tree without proper classrooms or materials. This shows
that the promise of education is not fully practiced, because the environment does not give children
the real quality learning they deserve (UNESCO, 2017).

3. Who might be the intended audience for this cartoon? Justify your answer.
(3 marks)
The intended audience for this cartoon might be government leaders, education policymakers, and
international organizations. This is because they are the ones responsible for making sure the right to
education is not just written in laws but also provided in practice. The cartoon shows that
communities still face poor learning conditions, so it is calling on those in power to take action and
improve education facilities and resources (UNESCO, 2017).

4. Write an essay of about 500 words in which you discuss the injustices
portrayed in the cartoon. Your essay must suggest 3 justifiable strategies a
government can use to address the injustice portrayed in the cartoon. Also
cite any 3 relevant, credible and accessible sources to substantiate your
argument.
The cartoon shows a clear injustice. It says people have a “Right to Education,” but the learners are
sitting under a tree with a small board and almost no materials. In South Africa, the Constitution
gives everyone the right to basic education (Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996).
However, many learners—especially in poor and rural areas—still study in weak conditions. Some
