Mickey – Act 1
o Youngest out of his very large family, so is therefore more protected and cared for
from Mrs Johnstone
o Is the twin that Mrs Johnstone kept
o Lives in the rough areas of Liverpool and shows this through his personality and
attitude towards life and any sort of interaction
o Rough childhood as mam struggled with money, got moved to Skelmersdale and is
surrounded by his multiple siblings which includes all the normal sibling fights
o Thick Liverpudlian accent
o Desperate to be like his older brother Sammy, and is always trying to steal his guns
and toys and always follows him about, even to the top of the hill where his mam
told him not to go (Edwards estate)
o Still has a fear of Sammy because of his short temper, e.g. pulling out the knife on
the bus, messing around with guns and threatening people
o Confident when in a group, e.g. when in school he’ll act out and make fun of the
teacher, but when he’s alone he is shy and is presented as smaller and not as the big
confident boy he is when in a group
o Thinks Edward is weird because of how posh he is at first, but comes to be extremely
close friends and appreciates him greatly as they grow closer
o Grows jealous of Edward and his private education and large house and lack of
money worries
o Linda is always a love interest of his, but he hides his crush and he finds it
embarrassing and feels that it puts him in a vulnerable position
o Mam (Mrs Johnstone) is very protective over him due to him being the youngest out
of all her children. Mickey is aware of a connection between Edward and his mam
but never seems to realise or be aware of what it is
o Isn’t very well educated as the contrast between his school and Edwards is huge,
including the teacher’s attitude and how the students sit and behave in class. Mickey
is the kid to act out and make fun of the teacher and students in class but will only
do it with the whole class there as he loses confidence when he is by himself. Acting
out in class does end him up with suspension, but he doesn’t seem to be bothered.
