Task 3: Teaching in a Blended Environment

A. Describe one video lesson from the Web Links section below that corresponds to
your program area (elementary, special education, or secondary education) that
you might use for an in-person learning environment, including the grade level,
subject, instructional topic, instructional activities, materials, and technologies

The video I decided to go with is the 2nd-3rd grade Exploring Garden Ecosystems. I am
hoping to teach 1st-3rd grade after graduating with my Masters in Elementary
Education, so it is where I am wanting to revolve most of my coursework around.
Exploring Garden Ecosystems is great for in-person learning as it provides an
opportunity to learn about the environments around us. The grade level for this
assignment I believe would be perfect for 2 nd grade. The Oregon Standard for 2 nd grade
science is 2-LS2-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need
sunlight and water to grow (Guerrero, A. 2014). The instructional topic would be
exploring garden ecosystems. The materials that we would need to explore garden
ecosystems in class would be dirt, plants, water, garden bed or a place to plant the
plants, as well as paper and pencils to record our findings. In this lesson students would
go around in groups and be able to visit different stations to determine is these specific
plants needed sunlight to grow. I will have stations with adults helping the students
interact with the plants and have opportunities to plant a plant of their choosing. I will
also have outdoor matching activities where students can match if a plant needs water,
sunlight, or both to grow. This will help them learn while also be able to work with a
hands-on activity. Students will have the opportunity to use their tablets to right up
their findings or use their notebook. Some students benefit from typing where others
benefit more from writing by hand.

B. Explain how the video lesson’s instructional activities, materials, and technologies
could be adjusted for a blended learning environment using the same grade level and
subject, including a challenge to implementation that might emerge in a blended
learning environment.

This specific 2nd grade science lesson about exploring garden systems would be a lesson
that could be used for a blended learning environment. The biggest challenge I see is
that this original lesson was created to be hands-on and in-person in a garden. It would
be a challenge for many hands-on lessons to create it to be just as effective for a
blended learning environment. How I would attack this challenge is first providing clear
