This document provides a clear and detailed summary of heart biology, including the structure of the heart, the cardiac cycle, and the circulatory system. It covers the anatomy of heart chambers, valves, blood vessels, and conduction system, along with explanations of systemic and pulmonary circulation. Additional sections explain the properties of arteries, veins, and capillaries, as well as the role of arterioles, the layers of the heart wall, and how heart rate is controlled. The notes also include facts, formulas like cardiac output, and questions and answers at the end to check your understanding, making it a complete revision resource. Keywords: cardiac cycle arteries veins capillaries systemic circulation pulmonary circulation atrium ventricle SAN AVN bundle of His purkinje fibres pacemaker stroke volume cardiac output

Heart - Made Easy to remember and understand
Remember: Anxiety and stress make you forget. You have the knowledge, trust yourself and it will go well.

The heart pumps blood around the body including the lungs. It also
supplies the cells with oxygen for respiration.

The heart has 4 chambers: Pacemakers: Group of cells.

Right and left atrium Found in right atrium, control

Right and left ventricles the heartbeat.

Pulmonary- into the heart

Artery – Away/ out of the heart

Cardiac muscles are myogenic (naturally contracts and does not need to
receive impulses.

Circulatory system:

Humans have double circulatory system – 2 circuits joined together.

 1st one – Right ventricle pump deoxygenated blood to the lungs to
take in oxygen. The blood then returns to the heart.
 2nd one – Left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood around all other
organs in the body.

 Superior vena cava – Carries deoxygenated blood from the upper
body
 Inferior vena cava – Carries deoxygenated blood from the lower and
middle body
 Pulmonary artery – Carries deoxygenated blood to lung
 Pulmonary vein – Carries oxygenated blood from the lung
 Valves – Helps blood flow in the right direction, prevent back flow
 SAN (Sinoatrial node) – Heart pacemaker, responsible for regular
contraction
 Septum – Divides left and right side of the heart
 Left ventricle is the thickest as it pumps blood throughout the body
