QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Benzodiazepine treatment - ANSWER-1. Assess and support (A,B,C's) airway,
breathing, circulation (cpr if warranted)
2. Administer oxygen
3. Monitor vital signs
4. If severe respiratory depression, establish IV access and reverse with flumazenil
5. Monitor recovery for at least 2 hours after the last dose, call ems with transport for
advance care if indicated
Benzodiazepine drug dosage for overdose - ANSWER-Flumazenil 0.01-0.02 mg/kg
(max .2 mg) repeated at 1 minute intervals.
Syncope signs and symptoms - ANSWER-Feeling of warmth, skin pale and moist,
pulse rapid initially, then gets slowed and weak. Dizziness, hypotension, cold
extremities, unconsciousness
Syncope treatment - ANSWER-1. Recline feet up
2. Loosen tight clothing
3. Ammonia Inhales
4. Administer oxygen
5. Cold towel in the back of neck
6. Monitor recovery
Acetaminophen Dosage - ANSWER-Children < 12 years: 10-15 mg/kg/dose every 4-
6 hours as needed (max 75 mg/kg/24 hours)
Children > or equal to 12 years and adults: 325-650 mg every 4-6 hours
Children with untreated obstructive sleep apnea may be misdiagnosed as having -
ANSWER-ADHD
Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea - ANSWER-Excessive daytime sleepiness,
loud snoring three or more nights per week, breathing cessation episodes, abrupt
awakening accompanied by shortness of breath, dry mouth or sore throat on
awakening, morning headache, difficulty staying sleep, attention problems, mouth
breathing, sweating, restlessness and waking up a lot
Surgery for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea - ANSWER-Adenotonsillectomy
Down syndrome characteristics - ANSWER-upslanting palpebral fissures, flat nasal
bridge, small broad flat nose, protruding thick tongue, low set ears, short neck,
intellectual disability and tendency toward obesity
Down syndrome intraoral findings - ANSWER-Open mouth, protruding tongue,
periodontal disease, missing and conical teeth
