Selected Text
Smith, J. (2023) The power of small changes. The Guardian, 5 April.
In a world overwhelmed by grand promises and sweeping reforms, the smallest
changes often make the greatest difference. When we swap a short drive for a walk,
choose a reusable bottle over plastic, or simply smile at a stranger, we alter the
emotional and environmental climate around us. These gestures may seem insignificant
in isolation, but collectively they create momentum.
History reminds us that revolutions are rarely sparked by monumental acts alone. They
often begin with whispers, with individuals making quiet, determined choices that ripple
outward. Consider the countless volunteers planting trees in forgotten corners of the
world, or the teachers who stay after class to mentor a struggling student. Their acts are
not broadcast on primetime news, yet their influence can be profound.
Change, in its truest form, is rarely a single event. It is a process — sometimes
frustratingly slow — that demands patience, persistence, and faith in the unseen. The
temptation to wait for the “right moment” is strong, but the right moment is almost
always now.
Our planet and our communities need these everyday acts of courage. While policy
shifts and global agreements are important, they cannot replace the quiet, consistent
efforts of individuals. Change begins here, with us, in the choices we make today.
