11/09/2023 – A1 DIGITAL DEVICES, TH EIR FUNCTIONS AND USE
What is an IT System?
An IT system is a group of hardware and software connected through a system to form an
‘ecosystem’ of rules that each device works together with to perform.
“a collection of computing and/or communications components and other resources that support one
or more functional objectives of an organization.”
What is it made up of?
Software, Signals and General PC Components
Who uses IT Systems?
Companies, Individuals and Schools
Key Words
- AIO – All in one device which is multifunctional
- MFD – A multifunction device
- Standalone Computer – A computer not reliant on any other computer or digital device to
function
- DAB – Digital Audio Broadcasting
- SLR Camera – Single Lens Reflex
- GPS – Global Positioning System
- Broadband – High speed transmission
- Mainframe Computers – ‘supercomputers’ that are used for processing large bits of data
usually used in servers
Why do we have IT Systems?
- Education & Training (School networks, online assessment, registration and communication)
It’s easier to track students progress with the use of IT Systems due to online assessing, grade
calculators and greater access to exam board resources. The network of the school is
improved through greater connection between devices which keep students safer and
enhances the quality of teaching through reliable services and greater resources.
- Personal (Entertainment and personal work) Due to the creation of Wi-Fi you can get access
to the internet where there are services such as YouTube and Netflix’s which can entertain us.
3
, Also, the access to Office 365 and Google Docs means you can use IT Systems to get on with
personal work
- Social (Online messaging, photo sharing and websites) In previous times, you would have had
too meet people IRL and communicate that way – you’d also have to print your photos out.
Due to the revolution in IT you can now communicate through Social Media apps like
Facebook and Snapchat instead of having to meet up. Also, you can store photos on your
phone’s storage or in the cloud rather than printing them out.
- Retail (Online shopping and E-commerce) Shopping for certain items would’ve been hard in
previous years due to having to go to shops physically to buy the items which can harm the
economy as people can not be bothered to travel so far for such a specific item. Nowadays,
you can use online shopping platforms like Amazon to get these items easily which helps the
economy due to convenience.
- Organizational Use (Offices and Firms) The operations of business’ has been so revolutionized
by IT Systems due to the ease of access IT Systems use. Majority of these enhanced IT Systems
are created for such ease and fast response times and accessibility that business are adopting
them. This adoption makes business run so much smoother and eliminate extra admin work
and also speeds up the processes of administration work.
- Creative (Production of movies, music and TV) The use of software in IT such as Adobe
Photoshop and Adobe Premier Pro makes it so much easier to be expressive in your creativity
and create things, and due to the interlinking of strong hardware in these IT systems and
MFD’s, its quick and easy to create things and share them into the world.
Exam Question
List the different areas of modern life that have evolved due to the emergence of digital devices
and discuss the devices that have helped (6 marks)
Due to the evolution of technological devices since the 1980’s a whole new world has flourished in
not just the tech space but also our entire lives. In scope, lets look at different industries.
In Business, the tech space has advanced everything in all departments and industries. For example,
in administrative industries, like office workers, communication between companies has evolved due
to the enhancements in mobile devices and other AIO’s like landline and email systems. They can use
Wi-Fi infrastructure to connect to one another and exceed the rate of business exchange. Therefore,
modern devices and technologies have revolutionized business. Furthermore, the ease of HR for
employees; the greater access to resources on computers, due to better ease of access, to support
employees' online eases pressure of HR workers and managers relieving the heavy flow of day-to-day
work.
