Procedure: Gastroscopy with biopsy
Indications: This 32-year-old female had some GI bleeding. A colonoscopy was performed last week that
showed no abnormalities, so it was decided that the upper GI tract should be viewed as well.
Procedure: The patient was brought to the procedure suite, at which time she received 10 mg of
intravenous Versed and 50 mg of intravenous Demerol for sedation. We used Cetacaine spray to
anesthetize the oropharynx. An Olympus video gastroscope was then passed through the oropharynx
and into the esophagus, which was unremarkable. The stomach was next visualized. There, multiple
gastric ulcers were seen in the antrum and pyloric area. There was some evidence of bleeding, but
nothing active at this time. Biopsies of these lesions were taken for histology. The scope was moved to
