1. THE SCHOOL CONTEXT

Complete the following open-ended questions to the best of your ability: Please give as much
information as possible.
1. Description of your school:
The school is located in a suburban area of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is a private school with
modern facilities, including well-equipped classrooms, a library, science laboratories, computer labs,
a sports field, and a hall. The school caters to learners from Grade R to Grade 12 and currently has
approximately 800 learners and 40 teaching staff. The Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT)
is English, and the school promotes a multicultural, inclusive environment.

2. Description of your classroom:
The classroom is medium-sized, bright, and well-ventilated, accommodating up to 25 learners
comfortably. It is equipped with a smartboard, whiteboard, and sufficient desks and chairs. Teaching and
learning resources such as textbooks, printed worksheets, visual aids, and educational posters are
available. The atmosphere in the classroom is welcoming and encourages open communication,
collaboration, and learner participation.

3. Description of your learners:
The class consists of 24 learners. Their level of readiness to learn varies, with some excelling and others
needing more support due to language barriers or learning difficulties. Most learners come from
supportive home environments, although a few face challenges such as long travel distances or limited
access to learning materials at home. However, all learners show enthusiasm and a willingness to
participate in class activities.

4. How did the information you have gathered in Questions 1 to 3 affect your lesson planning,
teaching, and assessment?
Understanding the school's resources and learners' backgrounds helped me tailor my lesson plans to be
inclusive and engaging. I incorporated visual aids, group activities, and digital content to accommodate
different learning styles. I differentiated assessment tasks and included informal assessments like peer
evaluation and oral presentations to support learners who struggle with traditional tests. The school’s
facilities allowed me to integrate technology and interactive learning in most of my lessons.

5. Description of your mentor/subject/learning area teacher:
My mentor teacher is experienced, knowledgeable, and very supportive. With over 15 years of teaching
experience, she provided me with valuable guidance on classroom management, lesson pacing, and
learner engagement. She was approachable and encouraged me to reflect critically on my lessons. Her
feedback was constructive and helped me grow professionally.

6. Description of your personal background:
I am currently studying towards an Honours Degree in Education through UNISA and hold a Bachelor of
Education in Senior and FET Phase, completed in 2020. I also have a 300-hour TEFL certificate obtained
in 2022. I have been teaching for over three years, mostly as an online tutor and as a class teacher in
different schools, focusing on English and Mathematics.

7. Description of any other appropriate experience/information:
My previous experience as an assistant teacher and tutor helped me develop strong communication and
lesson planning skills. Volunteering in after-school programs allowed me to understand diverse learner
needs and how to adapt my teaching strategies accordingly. These experiences have made my teaching
practice more dynamic and learner-centred.

8. Description of your experience with Unisa’s teaching practice arrangements:
UNISA provided clear guidelines and helpful resources for the teaching practice. The placement process
