P1.
Explain how the application of relevant principles and values will enable
professionals to provide holistic support for individuals who use social services.

As a health and social care worker, it is important that we are able to understand the
importance of holistic support when it comes to taking care of our clients or service user. The
benefits of a person centred approach would be immense especially if the client we are
taking care of are not just physically ill but also unwell on different aspects. But, In order to
do so, we must ensure that we are able to apply the relevant principles and values that are
needed. Its application would be vital in different ways, especially right from the first contact
we will have from the patient.

When we meet our patient, that is the time we are able to establish a connection with them.
It is where they will be able to see how we approach them and treat them. In order to
establish that relationship we want with them where trust is the foundation, we must be able
to show that we do not discriminate them in any way no matter what situation they are in
during our first meeting and up until the process of our caring. It is one of the principles and
values that we should uphold especially since the clients we will care for are diverse and has
different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs and experiences. Not discriminating our client is also
a way of respecting them as an individual and a key to further our relationship with them
that will allow us to know more about who they are and make the holistic support we want to
be as effective as possible.

In addition to that, using the principle of promoting anti discriminatory practice, we are
able to not make assumptions about the individual we are caring for. These assumptions
would be critical within the care they receive since if we “think” that the patient is like this or
like that, the support we will give them will not be accurate to what they need, want or like. It
will be about what we “thought” instead of what we and the client have planned together.

Having said so, as a health and social care worker, we must be able to communicate with
our patient. This value of communication is essential in providing holistic support for our
client in order to have a bond with them and not only that, it is also critical for the care we will
give because by communicating with them, we are able to gather data and create a care
plan for their support while recognising their preferences and needs together. We will also be
able to help them to promote their rights, understand their thoughts and ideas and at the
same time, educate them about their condition and allow them to choose for themselves.

Furthermore, by using principles and values, we are able to give support to different clients
with the same treatment for everyone that we will care for no matter how different they are
from each other. This values and principles which are Equality and Diversity is a vital part
as a healthcare professional especially because we are going to encounter people who
came from different cultures, traditions and beliefs while at the same time having different or
opposite ideas, opinions and values than ours.

Moreover, despite these possible dissimilarities mentioned, there will also be times where
our client will not have a good time and while we help them and support them with their

, condition holistically, they will lash out on us and be mad at us. As a health and social care
worker, one of the values that we hold which will enable us to continue supporting them
despite this is our Empathy.

Being empathetic means that we are able to stand on the shoes of our client and understand
that the reason why they are not in a good mood is because of the situation that they are in
now. This allows us to deepen our understanding of the client and provide further support
that they may need.

Similarly, having the values of 6 C’s which are: Caring, Compassion, Courage,
Communication, Commitment and Competence will also allow health care professionals
to be able to make the holistic support as successful as they can since being caring is the
core of nursing and having courage despite problems and challenges will not only allow for
the care to strengthen but at the same time, being courageous can help us understand the
importance of going beyond limits, being motivated and empowered which as health care
professionals will enable us to share with our clients especially within the holistic support we
are giving. Not only that, having compassion will allow us to be soft hearted despite the
circumstances and competence will enable us to use our knowledge that we learned
together with all of the principles and values.

But, out of all of these principles and values, the holistic support we will provide will only be
possible if we will be able to work in partnership or in a multidisciplinary team that share
the same goals like us which is to give the best possible care that will benefit the client in
accordance to what they want, need and like. A multidisciplinary team consists of the people
that you will be working with in order to make the care plan successful especially if the client
we are caring for has a very complex condition. Together with the client, the multidisciplinary
team will be helping each other and is a key for the holistic support that is provided.

To summarise and relate with the case study we have, Maureen, who has sight impairment,
suffers from multiple sclerosis and is now unable to meet her own personal care needs will
need holistic support because of her situation, especially since she will now be needing help
in taking care of herself when she dont need it before, must be feeling anxious, sad etc. Not
only that, she is also in need of help in terms of physical, social development. Due to this, we
must understand that working in partnership with different individuals would be essential to
aide her. It is also necessary that we communicate with her about what she wants to happen
in her care plan and respect her decisions. Lastly, being empathetic and applying the 6 c’s
can help her trust us and feel empowered.
