Line evaluations are performed by supervisors or commanders who are directly in
charge of operational members. These evaluations occur regularly—often daily—and
focus on how well police officers carry out their assigned duties, such as patrolling,

hotspots. For instance, a sector commander might evaluate whether patrol vehicles
were deployed to priority areas identified in the station’s crime prevention plan and

immediately and to take corrective action to ensure operational efficiency.
In contrast, staff evaluations are conducted by higher-ranking officers or designated
evaluators who are not in the immediate command structure of the members being

compliance aspects of a station’s functioning. Staff evaluations assess whether the
station is adhering to SAPS national instructions, whether resources are being
utilised effectively, whether records are correctly maintained, and whether proper

The necessity of conducting both types of evaluations at police stations lies in their
